Florida Fails The History Test

Pedro-1.JPG

Historian Walter Russell Mead of the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation had some nasty things to say about Florida education when it comes to world history. He criticized the state and gave it an "F" for its lack of Latin American coverage as well as other historical coverage in classrooms. The Miami Herald published a statement from the foundation which said ''Florida's approach is so superficial that it is, for all intents and purposes, worthless. There's nothing glowing in the Sunshine State's standards, and little worth redeeming.''

According to the Herald, the state didn't try too hard to defend the system, but simply said that the state standards are scheduled to be looked at in 2007. Only 12 states earned an A or B. Thirty-three didn't fair much better than Florida with grades of either D or F. According to the Herald, states that earned high grades were California, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, South Carolina and Virginia.
