NBA DRAFT DISAPPOINTMENT FOR TWO LOCALS

MSG.jpg

In 1988 the NBA scaled back the draft from a three round format to two. Last night, 30 players were selected in the first round, but former University of Miami guard Guillermo Diaz was not selected until the second round- going to the Los Angeles Clippers with the 52nd pick. Yesterday, we referenced an article in the Miami Herald which addressed Guillermo's expectations to go as high as the 24th pick. That didn't happend and neither did his high school teammate Juan Jose Barea hopes of being selected in the second round. Diaz, like a walk on in college, is not guaranteed a contract and will have to work to create a roster spot on a team that is loaded with talent.

Two years ago Diaz was a high flying sophomore averaging 18 points a game and dunking all over AAU competetion. Last summer he had knee surgery and that 42 inch vertical leap and explosive first step led to only 17 points a game and only four dunks. As an underclassmen who could have spent one more year working on ACC foes, some will question Diaz's decision to leave early. University of Miami senior guard Robert Hite worked out with the Miami Heat but joins Barea and names like Kevin Pittsnogle, Taj Gray and A.J. Price among the undrafted.
